Solar water heating grant: when it is different from Solar PV

SEAI treats solar water heating as a separate grant from Solar PV. Solar thermal panels heat domestic hot water; Solar PV panels generate electricity.

Current grant value

SEAI lists a EUR 1,200 grant for eligible solar water heating systems. This support is separate from the Solar PV grant.

When to consider it

  • Your home has steady hot-water demand and a suitable cylinder or planned cylinder upgrade.
  • You want a hot-water-focused system rather than electricity generation.
  • The installer can clearly explain how the system will integrate with your existing boiler, immersion, heat pump or controls.

Questions before accepting a solar thermal quote

  1. Is this quote for solar water heating, Solar PV, or both?
  2. What collector type, cylinder, controls and backup heat source are included?
  3. What annual hot-water contribution is assumed, and what usage pattern is that based on?
  4. What warranties cover the collectors, cylinder, pump station and workmanship?
  5. What maintenance is expected and who provides aftercare?
