Tesla Powerwall Ireland Guide

Solar batteries Ireland

Tesla Powerwall Ireland: what to check before adding one to solar.

Powerwall can make sense for some Irish homes, but it should be priced and judged separately from the panels. Use this guide to ask better questions before you accept a solar plus battery quote.

What Powerwall does

Tesla Powerwall is a home battery system. In a solar installation it can store surplus daytime solar for evening use, provide backup when the system is configured for it, and help some homes use more of their own generation instead of exporting it.

The important point is that a battery is not automatically good or bad. It depends on your evening usage, tariff, export payment, backup needs, inverter design, roof generation and how long you plan to stay in the home.

Price and rebate checks

Tesla pricing, installer pricing, gateway requirements and rebate offers can change. Before relying on any number, check Tesla's Ireland Powerwall pages and ask the installer for a separate line item for the battery, gateway, extra electrical work and VAT.

If a rebate or limited-time offer is mentioned, check the order dates, installation deadline, eligible product, claiming process and whether the installer or homeowner receives the benefit. Time-limited rebate pages can expire quickly.

SEAI grant treatment

The SEAI Solar PV grant supports eligible solar PV installations, with grant rules, home eligibility and registered-company requirements set by SEAI. Do not assume a battery creates an extra grant by itself. Ask the installer to show the grant amount separately from the battery economics.

When Powerwall may be worth considering

  • You use a lot of electricity in the evening or overnight.
  • You have or plan to add an EV charger, heat pump or other high-consumption load.
  • You value backup power enough to pay for the right gateway and wiring setup.
  • Your export payment is lower than the value you get from using stored energy yourself.
  • You can compare battery payback separately from panel payback.

Questions to ask in a quote

  • What exact Powerwall model is included, and what usable capacity is assumed?
  • Is backup included, and which circuits would actually stay powered?
  • Is a Tesla Gateway or other backup hardware included in the quoted price?
  • Is the solar inverter compatible with the proposed battery setup?
  • What warranty applies to the battery, inverter and installation work?
  • What is the quote price with panels only, and what is the extra cost for Powerwall?
  • What tariff, export rate and self-consumption assumptions were used?

SolarGuide view

For many homeowners, the first decision is getting a clean, grant-compliant Solar PV quote. The battery decision is the second decision. A good installer should be comfortable showing both versions so you can see whether Powerwall is about savings, backup, convenience or future electrification.
